3M internships for students

Internships at 3M

Here, we're all students - learning, discovering, exploring and innovating together. Our culture of curiosity and learning offers a transformational environment for students. In one of our 10 internship programs, you'll have the opportunity to work with world class experts and gain invaluable experience to start off your career right.

  • Our 10 internship programs:

    • Business Transformation & Information Technology
    • Design
    • Engineering
    • Finance
    • Frontline (Sales & Marketing)
    • Optimized Operations (O2)
    • Research & Development (R&D)
    • Sourcing
    • Strategy & Marketing Development (SMD)

However, the 3M Internship Program also covers internships outside of these programs in a variety of functions and/or locations throughout the organization. 3M provides opportunities to students currently pursuing a bachelor's degree, or higher, from an accredited university; some internship opportunities may have additional requirements.

  • What kinds of projects do interns get to work on at 3M?
Interns are supervised and coached by a full-time 3Mer. While intern projects are scoped to be completed within an internship, the projects represent real business challenges faced by 3M and mirror the work conducted by full-time members of the department.
  • Our goal is to be able to offer as many qualified interns as possible opportunities for future employment based on current business conditions.
  • In collaboration with 3M Internship Programs and Talent Acquisition, 3M has established relationships and focused recruiting at key schools. Our recruiting efforts generally take place in the fall as we attend career fairs and host other activities in an effort to engage with top talent on campus. The majority of our hired interns come from these recruiting efforts at these key schools. The remaining hires typically come from online applications and referrals. While every campus visit is different, 3M teams will commonly hold an information session ahead of the career fair for students to learn about our opportunities, and as a way for our teams to get to know the students. During the career fair, our teams enjoy interacting with students. In a combination of campus job postings, information sessions and the career fair, our teams will choose which students they would like to interview on campus. The interview teams then submit their feedback to the 3M program leads and hiring managers, who ultimately decides who to extend offers to. An on campus interview does not guarantee an offer from 3M, and interested students must still apply online at 3M Careers.
  • In order to be considered for a position, interested individuals must apply online, here. The majority of our recruiting efforts take place in the fall. We begin posting opportunities in September and continue to post positions throughout the recruiting season as they become available. Applications are reviewed and positions are filled on a rolling basis, so it’s in a candidate’s best interest to apply to positions as soon as possible.
